9/24/08 - Kirkland, NY - I took the day off yesterday and enjoyed the company of my hosts Joe and Sharon. I didn’t spend the whole day in Joe’s beautiful basement bar, I also managed to get a haircut, reset Deedee’s shoes and do a little writing.
This morning I said goodbye to Joe and Sharon. It was tough to leave as they are such wonderful people. It was about a six mile run to the outskirts of Utica. The route they had selected, allowed me to miss most of the city traffic. I stopped at a little turnout at the entrance to a park and had a nice lunch. They were quite a few visitors. I was surprised at the number of people that thought I was a concession renting horses.
It was about an 8 or 9 mile run to get through the city. The traffic was heavy enough that I didn’t have time to take any more pictures in Utica. After Utica, I passed through the towns of New Hartford and Clinton. The team and I would have a hard time getting a speeding ticket as we weren’t going fast enough to trigger the radar on the display alongside the road. Both New Hartford and Clinton were very nice towns. I stopped to chat with several families and individuals along the way - a lot of really super people.
I’m settled in for the night at Mark’s place in Kirkland. A real nice family that enjoys barbecues and backyard fires. After talking to Mark, I think I’m going to jog over and pick up route 5 again until I get closer to Syracuse. Then I’m going to angle southwest around Syracuse and pick up Route 20. According to Mark, route 20 is really hilly in the stretch running south of Utica to south of Syracuse.
On the 1 to 10 scale, this day was at least a 9. The horses are running good, the weather was perfect and the people were fantastic. I figure we did 21 miles today.
