Short Drive in the Sunshine

WAGONTEAMSTER .COM

2-15-10, Mount Calm, TX - After a long day yesterday, we had a nice short drive. Before we pulled out from the Cowboy Church, we gave the horses a little extra hay, while we had the luxury of morning showers.

A couple of miles down the road, we stopped at the Old Town Restaurant for a complimentary breakfast.  This was a very unique eating establishment, that served really good food. A ‘Thank You’ to the owner, Dave.

Hitched to the flagpole at the Old Town Restaurant for our complimentary breakfast

Driving west on Highway 31. we stopped at the Hubbard, Lakeside Park for lunch. While there, we met Kris Jester, who along with her husband, recently retired from the Police Force in Columbus, OH, and moved to Hubbard. She was kind enough to allow us to fill up the water tank on the wagon.

Dee and I waiting for our great breakfast

While there, we met our host for the Waco area.  Bonnie Kempf is going to put up the horses for a week, while I visit my brother Jim in Austin.  Bonnie and her friend Jennings Porter took a ride to find us, and met up with us at the Jester residence. This turned out to be a great post-lunch social gathering.

Lunch at the city, lakeside park

Tonight, we’re camped at a residence, just west of the town of Mt. Calm. Elmer and his daughter Laurie were kind enough to put us up.

After lunch gathering with some new friends

It’s amazing how many nice people we’re meeting, as we travel across the state of Texas.  Most Texans we’ve met really ‘get’ the idea of the wagon, and have been super to us.

Common site from the wagon - We provide ‘Horse TV’ for horse along the way.

Tomorrow, we’ve got a 23 mile drive to Bonnie’s place in Waco. Denise and I are really looking forward to a ‘civilized’ existence for a week.  After that, we’re headed for the wide open spaces of West Texas and New Mexico.
