1/4/09, Elberfeld, IN - On the morning of the 4th, I had the horses hitched in Somerville and on the road by 8 am (Central Time). I just found out that morning that I had crossed a county line and switched to the Central Time Zone. The only way I knew was because my cell phone downloads a time stamp from the GPS satellites. The morning pull was fairly uneventful until we approached Interstate I-164. For about a two mile stretch after crossing I-64, state route 57 turns into I-164. South of I-64 this was busy interstate. Fortunately, there was a nice shoulder and we stayed out of the traffic lanes. A photographer for the Evansville, IN newspaper managed to shoot the two pictures shown below.
At the freeway exit, I met up with an entourage that included my hosts, reporters and several well wishers. Together we drove the mile or so to Kim and Roy Gilkey’s place - The Double M Stable. The next couple of hours were a frenzy of unharnessing the horses, meeting friends and well wishers and newspaper interviews. Later in the afternoon, I managed to take a horseback ride with a friend. Later a Vet stopped by and filled out health certificates for the horses. In the evening, a news crew from Evansville Channel Fox-7 stopped by for a one hour interview.
