2/7/10, Athens, TX - This was a real ‘banner’ day. After pulling out of the Volunteer Fire Station, we met an endless parade of good folks along the road. The two young ladies in the picture to the right, were on their way to rope some calves at a rodeo. (Here in Texas, Cowgirls get to wear their spurs in the truck)!
Just before lunch, we met with Darlene Delgado and her family. Darlene has been following the blog for a while and was anxious to meet up with us. Darlene jumped on the wagon and drove with us until we found a lunch spot. This was a really nice lunchtime.
Not far down the road, we stopped at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex, where they were holding the “Best in Texas” Barrel Racing. Wayne, who manages the place, readily agreed to put us up and made us feel welcome. The lads have some nice pens, with plenty of fresh rye grass to graze on.
Denise and I went up and watched the events. There was some really nice looking horseflesh here, but most of them looked a little high strung to pull a wagon in traffic. Oh well, I guess Doc is going to have to wait awhile before he get a new buddy to pull next to him.
Tomorrow, we have an invitation to stay with some folks about 12 miles on the other side of Athens. A couple of short days will do everyone a lot of good. This was a really great day!
